Canada Bails Out Auto Sector with $3.3B

Just as I announced, on Saturday, Prime Minister Stephan Harper and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced in Toronto CND $3.3 billion ($1.1 billion coming from Ontario) in aid for the auto-sector. This amount is proportional to Canada’s auto share in North America. Canada previously said it would offer some sort of bailout if the US moved first. The US came up with $17.4 billion a few days ago, and now Canada has kept to its word with its own bailout. At the news conference, McGuinty told reporters the bailout was required because it’s worth fighting for people’s jobs. Harper added these loans were not a blank check and included various conditions to ensure change and long term sustainability. Recently, Russia also announced its own bailout for it’s carmakers.
