Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has confirmed Twitter will start charging businesses to use certain features on Twitter. Stone said, “We are noticing more companies using Twitter and individuals following them. We can identify ways to make this experience even more valuable and charge for commercial accounts,” Twitter can be a very powerful communication tool, with some accounts having close to 60,000 followers. TechCrunch recently reported Dell made 1 million over the Christmas holidays by Twittering promotional discounts.
$20 million so far has been put into Twitter from VCs, and the service just hasn’t found a way to monetize the service yet. I guess this is one of them, the question is will companies dish out money to use the service, does it actually add value? Currently, there are about 4-6 million people using the service.
