SlingPlayer Mobile has just been launched on the iPhone. The app lets you watch live TV from your at home cable, satellite and DVR signals by streaming live content. Note, that SlingPlayer Mobile does not support Sling Classic, AV, and Tuner models, but will work with the new Slingbox and other legacy devices.
The app was delayed because of excessive bandwidth concerns on AT&T’s network. The app has now been launched, but the service is restricted to only WiFi and will not work via 3G as it has been blocked by AT&T.
AT&T today released an official statement saying, “Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer [including the iPhone], are specifically prohibited under our terms of service,” AT&T went on to say, “Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network. The application does not run on our 3G
wireless network. Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service. We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs.”
The app is now available in the US, Canada, among other nations, from the App Store for $30. The price is the same the company already charges for the mobile app on the other supported mobile platforms.
Mobile versions of Slingbox have already been available for years on other platforms such as Windows Mobile, where you can use the service over 3G.
If you have a jailbroken iPhone, you can make some changes to enable the app to work over 3G – of course, you are completely on your own in trying this. If you’re up for it, you can follow these simple steps with one of these two methods:
Method One
1. With an SSH client (such as WinSCP), browse to /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/ on your device
2. In the file VoIPover3G.plist, add “com.slingmedia.SlingPlayer” as one of the bundles
Method Two
Or even easier, using Cydia, install the Tricker ThreeG package. To install it:
1. Launch Cydia on your iPhone
2. Select the Manage Tab
3. Search for “Ticker ThreeG”
4. Click the “Install” button on the top right
5. After installed, tap the “Confirm” button at the top right
6. Launch Sling Player and enjoy
Using the Ticker ThreeG package will also let you make VoIP calls on your iPhone, a feature disabled by AT&T.
