According to a new blog post by Twitter founder Biz Stone, Twitter will begin to include native support for geo-location based information via a new API. The new feature will now give users the option to include their GPS location from each tweet.
The feature will be available directly from Twitter and it’s mobile site. Third party applications will also begin to add the GPS support from the API.
The setting will initially be set to off for obvious privacy concerns, but users can opt to turn it on.
It certainly makes sense for Twitter to have native geo-location support, and now finally the company has decided to push forward with it.
There are countless geo-location based web-services, with the biggest being Google Latitude, that is essentially a social network that lets you follow your contacts in real-time within Google Maps.
Google has also recently added geo-location awareness to its mobile search engine.
Facebook is also expected to soon add geo-location features in the next few months given intensifying competition from Twitter.
