The popular movie and TV show streaming and rental service, Netflix, has announced it would expand its streaming content service to north of the boarder starting some time in fall.
The company currently offers content streaming from the cloud to a variety of consumer electronics, including televisions, through Microsoft’s gaming console the Xbox 360 (including the other current next-generation gaming consoles), and personal computers, among other devices.
The company only said it would expand its reach into Canada in fall, but declined to release information relating to a more specific time frame or possible pricing.
Netflix currently allows U.S. consumers to get unlimited content through streaming for one low monthly rate.
The company said the service will firstly be available only in English, and would later add French support.
The scheduled Canadian launch will be the first time the company expands operations outside of the United States.
It is important for Netflix to make an early push into Canada to gain first mover competitive advantage, especially how other competitors like Blockbuster continue to struggle in the marketplace as consumers shift to getting content delivered more conveniently by streaming from the Internet.
The on demand content streaming market is set to greatly intensify as a number of firms have announced they would enter the space with their own respective products.
Google recently announced Google TV, a set-top-box that is powered by Google Android OS that will include movie streaming directly from the Internet.
The largest consumer electronics retailer in North America, Best Buy, also offers movie downloading and streaming via its product CinemaNow, and most recently announced on May 19 that it would expand it to add support for an array of additional electronics.
The Netflix stock (NASDAQ:NFLX) is trading down almost 2-percent in early morning trading to $116.16 per share.
