Apple’s hugely successful iPhone 4 firstly debuted in the U.S. and select European countries like Germany and the U.K., and most recently a few weeks ago in 17 additional countries including Canada.
The iPhone 4 is now set to launch in South Korea.
On Sunday, South Korea’s KT Corporation confirmed in a statement the company planned to launch the iPhone 4 across the country by the end of this week.
The iPhone 4 drove thousands of people to line up on launch day in Canada (the case was similar in other areas), with supplies still being very limited for consumers who want to purchase the device today from an Apple store.
An Apple representative told us the iPhone would be more readily available in the coming weeks in Canada, and said there were still daily lines in the morning with people eager to purchase one while being hopeful there would even be a shipment.
The never before seen strong demand for any Apple product propelled the iPhone 4 to become the most successful product launch for the company, as Apple sold 1.7-million units only three days post the June 24 initial launch.
In anticipation of strong demand in South Korea for Apple’s latest gem, KT Corp. allowed people to preorder the device, saying it had received and processed 270,000 preorders.
The company said it would begin to ship the devices to consumers starting on September 10, and would subsequently start offering the device across retail stores, but failed to disclose exactly when the devices would become available after preorder shipments were completed.
The iPhone will come preinstalled with Apple’s latest iOS version 4.1 that will be available for all users on September 7 or September 8.
iOS version 4.1, as detailed during a press event on September 1 in San Francisco that was hosted by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs, will include a number of new features, namely support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography, iTunes TV show rentals ($0.99 per episode with 48-hour access), high definition video uploading to YouTube via WiFi, new social gaming through Apple Game Center that allows apps to utilize the new social network that would allow players to track achievements and scores, and a number of under the hood updates to fix minor bugs, including a known issue with the iPhone 4’s proximity sensor that could mistakenly end phone calls.
For those who are not familiar with HDR photo technology, it is essentially a software processing and render method that should result in better quality and more realistic photos by catching a larger set of color intensity levels with multiple photos.
The next major iOS update, version 4.2, is expected to be available for download some time in November that will include printing support, and will also be available for the iPad.
A warning to people who have chosen to jailbreak their iPhone 4’s to not install the new update as their jailbreak only supports up to iOS version 4.0.1.
However, the people behind the jailbreak software already stated a new jailbreak will soon become available for iOS 4.1.
