Telus, Bell iPhone price plans unveiled


iphone compass Telus, Bell iPhone price plans unveiledCanadian CDMA carriers Telus and Bell are set to launch the iPhone 3G S on Nov 5, and Nov 4, respectively. The companies have now announced pricing for the devices.

Telus will offer the 16GB (black/white) version for $199, the 32GB version will cost CND $299 and will be available in both black and white.

Both companies are not introducing exclusive monthly plans for the iPhone. Plans start at $50 per month at Telus, and at $55 per month at Bell.

At Telus, the most affordable plan will set you back $50 per month, and will give you 150 minutes with 500MB of data (with tethering included). All plans include unlimited messaging as well.

nortel Nortel blocking RIM from buying wireless Nortel AssetsWaterloo-based Research In Motion (RIM) is looking to acquire Nortel’s CDMA and Long Term Evolution Access businesses, among other assets, for $1.1 billion.

Now, RIM is publicly accusing Nortel for intentionally blocking its acquisition bids mainly because RIM wants to buy additional Nortel assets.

China to invest $1.5B in Canadian Minor


China’s sovereign wealth fund announced today it would invest $1.5 billion CND in Teck Resources Corp., a leading Canadian minor. The Chinese Class B investment will amount to a 17.2 percent stake in the minor, and give the Chinese 6.7 percent in voting power. The deal will be finalized by July 14, 2009. No other information was released regarding the Beijing investment.

exxon ExxonMobil invests $26B in TransCanada Alaska pipelineExxonMobil Corp announced today a massive $26 billion investment with TransCanada Corporation for the US Alaska natural gas pipeline project.

Upon completing, the project would provide access to 36 trillion cubic ft of natural gas in the Arctic region. The pipeline would provide up 4-4.5 billion cubic ft in daily natural gas.

U.S. Trade Rep says Obama will not redraft NAFTA


Top U.S. Trade Representative Ronald Kirk said today that the U.S. would not try to redraft NAFTA. Kirk said, “The president has said we will look at all of our options, but I think they can be addressed without having to reopen the agreement,”

Redrafting NAFTA was a campaign promise made by Obama that was aimed to address labour union concerns of NAFTA hurting American jobs.

During the U.S. campaign, a leaked memo indicated Obama’s economic adviser told Canadian Consul General Georges Rioux that Obama’s statements should not be taken seriously Read the full story

Queen’s Park has just announced am ambitious $9 billion plan to expand the Greater Toronto Area transit system. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has already been drafting euro-style rail lines for years now.

The money will be used to build a new 33km light rail system moving across Eglinton Avenue from the Kennedy subway station in the city’s east end all the way to Pearson International Airport that is scheduled for completion by 2013. Read the full story

Canada to pay Washington $47M in softwood lumber ruling


An arbitrator has ruled Canada should pay the U.S. $46.7 million in penalties resulting from an apparent 2006 softwood lumber breach. Canadian International Trade Minister Stockwell Day said today the money will become available to Washington soon. The U.S. alleges Canada subsidizes softwood lumber production with aid programs and low stumpage fees.

Canada says GM, Chrysler plans are inadequate but still awards loans, Obama says GM, Chrysler could use short-term bankruptcy


The Canadian government announced plans today to offer GM, Chrysler up to $4 billion in bridge loans to continue operations.

Under the announced plan today, the Canadian government will earmark $1 billion for Chrysler, $250 million of witch will become available immediately, and an additional $500 million by sometime in April. Part of the deal, Chrysler must interest notes equal to 6.67% of the aggregate loan.

Fox, Red Eye comedians apologize over ignorant Canadian military remarks


Comedians Gutfeld and Doug Benson from the Fox news TV show Red Eye have apologized over critical remarks made about the significant Canadian military contribution in Afghanistan.

Comedian Gutfeld said during the segment, “Isn’t this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country?” Benson added he wasn’t even aware of Canada’s involvement at all.

Benson, who was scheduled for a show in Edmonton, was forced to cancel his event after receiving significant physical threats. Read the full story
