The world’s largest online social network with over 500-million registered users, Facebook, has updated its mobile BlackBerry application to version 1.9.0.20, bringing new key features.
The most notable addition is Facebook Places integration, allowing BlackBerry Facebook users to check in at their current location, allowing friends to know where they are.
Facebook launched Places amid the growing popularity of other social location sharing websites, most notably the New York City-based check in service, Foursquare, which has received just over $21-million in total venture capital funding since being founded in February 2009.
The updated version of Facebook for BlackBerry allows users to check in to establishments found using Google search that are within about a 1-mile radius from the users GPS location.
If the application fails to identify the correct establishment a user is at, customized locations can be added.
Friends could also tag other friends, Like posts, and post comments on locations, all with push notifications.
Facebook Places is also integrated with BlackBerry Maps, and as evident from the screen shot, the application also received a bit of an upgrade on the icons with general enhancements to the user interface.
Facebook firstly added the Places function on iPhone devices, and more recently released the app for Google Android devices, and of course today, the BlackBerry platform received the addition as well.
Users should exercise caution when checking into places for privacy and security reasons, and should ensure to review the privacy settings specific to the Places app to ensure only wanted users, like friends only, can see checked in locations.
The application will only update your current location if you manually update it. It will not automatically track and post your location, which is probably a good thing anyway, right?
