The luxury Italian carmaker, Lamborghini Ltd., officially unveiled its new sport-utility concept vehicle, the Lamborghini Urus, in Beijing, days before the annual Beijing auto show.
The Lamborghini Urus is the first real attempt by Volkswagen AG (parent firm) to produce a full production super-car SUV.

The company did not disclose full specifications of the vehicle, but we do know the Urus will have a V10 600 horsepower dual-clutch transmission with all-wheel drive, including 24-inch wheels, will have the lowest carbon emissions in its class thanks to a new lightweight material used to build the vehicle called Forged Compo, and will also include cameras on mirrors (and on a rear view panel) with internal LCDs.
The Lamborghini Urus is expected to go on sale in 2015 or 2016 (assuming regulatory approval), we could also expect fewer than 5,000 production units to go on sale. The company did not announce any details of a possible price. It is unclear if any current customers will get preference if the vehicle does go on sale.
As the worst of the global credit crisis now seems to be behind us, luxury vehicle sales have materially increased on a year-over-year basis in the United States, according to market data from The Wall Street Journal.
Other luxury carmakers, including Porsche Ltd, Mercedes-Benz and Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) AG, have already developed SUVs for their respective brands, seeing significant growth particularly in emerging markets.
With the Lamborghini Urus, Volkswagen AG will be better positioned in the market place by diversifying its vehicle lineup with a new SUV that should serve as a hedge to Lamborghini’s otherwise natural cyclical exposure in its target luxury industry.
The Volkswagen AG stock (PINK:VLKAY) is up 44 basis points to $29.83 per share in after hours trading over the weekend.
