Microsoft Corp. today revealed new information about it’s upcoming version of Office for Mac.
One of the most important additions to Office 2010 Mac is the addition of the first Outlook application for Mac. We firstly reported on August 13, 2009, that Microsoft had confirmed Outlook would be released for Mac. Microsoft had released Entourage as the substitute to Outlook, but it lacked many wanted business centric features such as Exchange support that were found only in the PC version of Outlook.
Today, Microsoft confirmed full connectivity support for the Outlook version of Mac. It will also include support for co-authoring, and document sharing which includes support with Office Online, which allows you to work on documents in the cloud, allowing your colleagues to make changes to the documents as well.
Additionally, the company showed off application screen shots, confirming the traditional “Ribbon” theme found in the PC version would now also become the standard on the Mac version.
Microsoft also said users would be able to easily import .PST files, among other formats.
Microsoft is set to release Office 2010 for the PC version this June, with the Mac version expected to arrive in time for the Christmas holiday shopping season this December.
Update: Reports indicate Microsoft is considering developing an Office version for Apple’s iPad tablet, according to remarks made by Microsoft Senior Product Manager Mike Tedesco at the unveiling of Office 2010 Mac today. Mr. Tedesco essentially said the iPad is a new technology and that Microsoft is considering bringing Office to the device. He went on to say there was nothing else he could discuss today towards that possibility.
