Microsoft Unveils Windows Mobile 6.5, LG-GM730, My Phone, Marketplace

Microsoft has just officially announced Windows Mobile 6.5 at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona. The new OS is expected to arrived in the second half of 2009 boasting a new interface and a new version of Internet Explorer mobile that promises desktop-like browsing. Adobe also announced MWC the support for Flash for Windows Mobile 6.5. Microsoft also unveiled its new My Phone service, which essentially lets you sync your messages, photos and videos, contacts to the online cloud syncing service, similar to Apple’s MobileMe service. Microsoft My Phone will also allow you to easily backup and restore your entire Windows Mobile device. However, My Phone will not support email sync. Microsoft CEL Steve Ballmer said at the conference, “We’re working with partners across the industry to deliver a new generation of Windows phones that break down the barriers between people, information and applications,”

Microsoft also unveiled its new mobile app store, dubbed Microsoft Marketplace during the conference. The new MS app store will allow the millions of Winmo users to easily find and buy apps for their phone developed by third party developers.

Microsoft also announced at MWC the world’s third largest mobile phone maker, LG Electronics, will power its new LG-GM730 handset with the new OS. The LG-GM730 will also include LG’s 3D S-Class User Interface, making the handset one of the easiest phones to navigate from an interface perspective.

The LG-GM730 also features 3G 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 2Mbps HSUPA, a 5MP camera, WiFi, GPS, among other features. The phone will be available in the first half of 2009 to accompany the release of Windows Mobile 6.5
