Facebook Messenger Update Brings Free Voice Calls to iOS/Android in Canada


fbThe world’s largest social network with over one billion users, Facebook, has made a significant improvement to its mobile Messenger apps for iOS and Google Android, bringing voice clips and free voice calls (VoIP), allowing users to directly talk with their Facebook friends.

The VoIP feature is currently only available for Canadian iOS users, and works over either WiFi or a cellular connection.

Google Now Indexes Some Facebook Comments


googleThe world’s largest online search engine, Google, is now indexing Facebook comments that are posted using the Facebook Commenting plugin on websites that use the plugin to power their commenting system.

If you use your Facebook account to post a comment on a website that uses Facebook Comments, your comment (with your name) can now be indexed by Google’s web spiders and will be directly ranked and searchable in Google’s index.

Facebook Announces New “Send” Button


facebook-send-buttonThe world’s largest social network with more than 500-million registered users, Facebook Inc., today announced via a blog post a new “Send” button aimed at making it easier for users to share content on Facebook only with a select group of friends.

Facebook says its users have created more than 50-million Groups, and the new Send button could be used to share content with select groups.

There are currently two ways to share a link on Facebook, either through the Share or Like button. The only caveat with the current share methods is a user cannot filter which friends see the shared content, rather a shared link simply appears in the Newsfeed of all friends – the new Facebook Send button simply aims to change that disadvantage.

RIM Revamps Facebook BlackBerry App, Includes Facebook Chat


Research In Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, has made available its new Facebook application for BlackBerry devices, available now in beta to a limited number of people through BlackBerry Beta Zone.

The revamped application features a more intuitive user interface that is more consistent with the BlackBerry experience. For example, other system notifications outside of the Facebook app, like new e-mails or BBM notifications, now appear unobtrusively at the top of the system bar.

Facebook Ups Security With HTTPS Connections


facebookThe world’s largest social networking website with over 500-million members, Facebook, has added support to a long requested feature, SSL connection support, which ensures personal data remains private by encrypting data before it is sent or received over the Internet.

Security experts warn users that access Facebook over public networks and unsecured wireless connections are most at risk, as malicious network software could be used by hackers to retrieve Facebook browser cookies that contain unencrypted personal information.

New Zynga Game CityVille Now Most Popular Game On Facebook


Zynga Corporation, the company behind several popular games on the world’s largest social network, Facebook, has now earned the number one spot for its new game CityVille, which launched about a month ago.

The objective of CityVille is to build and manage a virtual city from the ground up, with social features that allow users to interact with other user built cities, including the ability to buy land and open store franchises, all with a common virtual currency.

Zynga earns revenue from CityVille as users purchase premium features to use in building their city, a business model that could earn the company up to $700-million in total revenue in this fiscal year, according to analyst expectations.

Facebook unveils social messaging system, with Facebook email addresses


facebookFacebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, today unveiled a new social messaging feature on Facebook (official blog post) at the company’s headquarters that aims to consolidate different communication medias into one primary place.

Users will be able to manage different e-mail addresses, their text messages, and Facebook messages directly from one application.

The Messages application would display conversations with friends, and friends of friends, with other non-personal messages being kept separate in another view.

Facebook brings Facebook Places social location feature to BlackBerry

The most notable addition is Facebook Places integration, allowing BlackBerry Facebook users to check in at their current location, allowing friends to know where they are.

Facebook launched Places amid the growing popularity of other social location sharing websites, most notably the New York City-based check in service, Foursquare, which has received just over $21-million in total venture capital funding since being founded in February 2009.

Google engineer develops Facebook Disconnect to protect your online privacy


facebookAbout two years ago, Facebook launched Facebook Connect, a service that allows third party websites to leverage Facebook data by allowing their users to connect their Facebook profile with the website for deeper integration.

Thousands of third party websites and applications currently use Facebook Connect, promptly raising privacy concerns over how personal data is being handled, and what data is accessible to third parties, among other concerns.

In the past few weeks, Facebook applications like FarmVille reportedly shared confidential personal information about users obtained through Facebook Connect with numerous different partners such as advertising networks.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the FarmVille app, which has almost 60-million users on Facebook, specifically shared personal data with up to 25 third parties without user knowledge.

Facebook press event could yield Skype deal, Facebook email accounts


facebookThe world’s largest social network with more than 500-million registered users across the globe, has announced a press event that is scheduled to take place at the company’s headquarters in California tomorrow at 10am.

Facebook did not disclose any details of the event, including what the company would unveil. It simply sent out a teaser invitation to members of the press inviting select members to the invite-only event.

It is widely rumored the company will use the event to announce a new partnership with the largest VoIP telephone company, Skype, that would bring telephone capabilities straight from Facebook, likely to be integrated with Facebook Chat.
