Google, HTC, Samsung, Motorola slapped with new Android patent infringement lawsuit


The France-based digital security firm, Gemalto Corp, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Google, Samsung, High Tech Computer (HTC) Corporation, and Motorola, in a U.S. District Court in Texas, in a case relating to alleged patent infringement with Google’s mobile operating system, Google Android.

The patents in question relate to the Google Dalvik virtual machine, a technology that converts and executes Java apps on its Android operating system.

The virtual machine firstly converts .class Java apps to Dalvik Executable files and then executes the files to run the apps more efficiently on memory sensitive devices such as smartphones.

Samsung posts record quarterly earnings, fueled by semiconductor growth


The South Korean-based global electronics giant, Samsung, late today published [PDF] earnings for the first quarter of 2010.

The company had the highest earnings ever recorded in a single quarter, reporting a massive USD $3.6-billion profit, largely attributable to increasing demand for semiconductors as the global economy begins to pick up again.

The company’s semiconductor unit had the most year-over-year growth of 57-percent, as the company sold 8.2-trillion Won worth of semiconductor chips, of which 5.59-trillion Won was from memory chips alone, which those sales increased by 76-percent from the same period in 2009. 30-percent of aggregate semiconductor sales were attributable to personal computer parts.

Nokia, Samsung to Unveil Mobile App Stores


symbianNot to be left behind, both Samsung and Nokia are set to unveil a new mobile app store at the upcoming MWC 2009. Samsung will launch its Samsung Mobile Applications app with just over 1,000 apps initially available for mainly Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile powered devices. Both freeware and commercial apps will be available.

Nokia, which owns the Symbian OS, will also unveil its Nokia app store as well during the conference. Nokia already has its app store finalized; it just now needs to officially unveil it. The new app stores will help the millions of users of the most used mobile OS Symbian find and use useful mobile applications, as currently, people mainly search online the internet and online forums to find the apps.
