Great article! There are several map mash-ups that I've been looking for — namely a good travel map mashup, and you have it here.

The main one I was digging was MapVivo, as that looked like it would turn out to finally be a map mashup that I could really use for cross-country trips and such. Though, the one disappointment of it is that the KML import feature on the site will not overlay just any KML. To wit, I had used a tool to export my Flickr photos as KML (see http://blog.reevestech.net/2009/06/using-kml-to...), and then wanted to overlay these on a trip map. But, alas, the KML parser & implementation on this site would not let me do that.

Hi Tad,
Great to know that you digg MapVivo, I'm a co-founder. I'm sure we'll be able to add the KML support that you need – expect an email from me with details shortly. We're striving to provide a really usable, feature rich and yet simple travel journal and travel planner. We love getting feedback so please send your thoughts our way either at http://mapvivo.com/feedback or directly to me (skype: tom.sieron, twitter: mapvivo). Cheers.

Tom – thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the follow-up. I've actually had quite a few thoughts on this, so I'll put that together in a little post for you, as I had a couple of use cases for this that others might have as well, in terms of the workflow of being on a trip, adding photos, and integrating with other photo sources such as flickr or panoramio.

Great article, and some there I didn't know about – the Detonation Effects Simulator is very cool.
You might also want to take a look at imapflickr.com. Its a site that allows you to map geotagged flickr photosets or searches onto custom google maps. Finished maps can then be embedded into blogs or websites, without any complicated coding. Hope you like it

Wow! Google maps is really awesome, I've been looking at the API recently and there are so many possibilities.

But if you use Google Maps with Google Base together, the result is … explosion of possibilities.
